Antibodies are proteins in our body, which bind to invaded bacteria and toxins, and function to weaken or exclude them. Since antibodies bind to specific substances, we have been using antibodies as laboratory reagents for the purpose of detection, separation and purification of proteins and other substances in medical and biological research area.

Furthermore, antibodies are being used in clinical diagnosis for diseases because antibodies have been developed as drugs (antibody drugs) because some antibodies bind to cancer and lead cancer to death, and some antibodies neutralize protein that causes inflammation. By utilizing the specific nature of antibody, which is an ability to bind to only the target cell, antibody drugs can strike diseased part of patient’s body effectively. Antibody drug is expected for treatment of intractable diseases because of having different characteristics from usual drug based on small-molecule chemical.
