Osteopontin

Japanese Osteopontin Study Group
Osteopontin (OPN) is also called Uropontin, 2ar, BSPI, 44kD bone phosphoprotein, or Eta-1. OPN is identified as a bone matrix protein, but it has also been found in milk, placenta, urine, leukocyte, kidney and some tumor tissues. OPN may be regulating bone resorption by binding to avs3 integrin on osteoclast, so that OPN attracts attention in bone research. In the resent studies, OPN binds to CD44 on the vascular endothelial cells and has been attracting attention as cancer metastasis related molecule.
In addition, it has been reported that the binding between a4 and a9 integrin expressing cells and thrombin-cleaved OPN is related to various types of inflammation.
